Art at Allerton Bywater is an expression of creativity and imagination. By the end of Year Six, we hope that pupils leave us having developed competency in a range of artistic techniques, a curious and experimental attitude, and having acquired a knowledge of famous artists and artistic traditions.
Art is taught by class teachers on a rolling programme with Design and Technology between Year 1 and Year 6: each week children will have a lesson in either art or DT. In the Early Years Foundation Stage, children have regular opportunities to engage with the arts, enabling them to explore and play with a wide range of media and materials. Sometimes, art is linked to other curriculum areas, such as history, where links are virtuous to the art topic being studied; often, art is taught as a subject of its own standing.
The curriculum for Art is carefully sequenced so that children have opportunities to learn about and refine the skills of drawing, painting and colour theory, 3D and multimedia several times throughout their years at school, progressively building skills and knowledge across a broad range of contexts. Please see the flowcharts below, which show how our curriculum in art builds children's knowledge and skills year on year.
Each of the units of study in Art are matched with a famous artist or artistic movement giving opportunities to reflect on cultural values, beliefs and identity and exploring the many different communities that make up our world. Our planning for art has been informed by professional bodies such as Access Art. Each child has a sketchbook in which they can observe, record, analyse, practise and refine. These sketchbooks stay with children all year.
